The reconstruction of Jackson Street in downtown Saint Paul is the critical first piece of an ambitious downtown bikeway network that will redefine the way people get around the City and improve the public realm for all users of the transportation system. The north-south corridor is a major downtown artery and a vital connection between the regional riverfront trail system and state trail system on the edges of downtown.
Following extensive community engagement including two week-long planning and design workshops, pop-up events, and regular meetings with separate advisory groups representing the community, technical experts and policy makers – yes, that’s three project advisory committees – an overall design vision and detailed plans were drawn up for a two-way, separated cycle track with protected intersections on the west-side of the street. The project also includes reconstructing street paving and sidewalks; the water main, catch basins and sewers; lighting; signals, signage and pavement markings; landscaping and street furniture.
Staff in Toole Design Group’s Minneapolis office have led the community engagement and planning processes, drafting in landscape architects and engineers from across the company to help complete the final design and construction documents.
