Keeping true to the Toole Design Group (TDG) philosophy, TDG was one of seven winning submissions for the design phase of the DC Water Green Infrastructure Challenge. Last year, DC Water launched the Green Infrastructure Challenge, engaging firms to design innovative green practices that treat stormwater. Capturing the water before it can enter the combined sewer system will aid in alleviating combined sewer overflows in the District. Each firm chose an area to provide an innovative solution for managing stormwater.
The Tetra Tech-TDG-Hazen and Sawyer team selected Lamont Park, in the Mount Pleasant Business District, for the implementation of a permeable pavement bike lane and a bioretention planter. Green infrastructure at this location will reduce runoff into the combined sewer, improve bike safety, promote bicycle ridership, and improve the park as an amenity for the neighboring businesses and residents. This design was developed as a template that could be applied throughout DC to gain an exceptional amount of stormwater management for DC Water. More than 51 miles of bike lanes are currently present within DC with considerable growth expected over the next several years. This provides significant opportunities to retrofit existing lanes and integrate green infrastructure into new bike lanes.
