Peter Lagerwey, Regional Office Director for Toole Design Group in Seattle, has been recognized by the White House as a “Champion of Change” for his work pioneering and popularizing the road diet. The recognition honors Peter for having “provided exemplary leadership in advancing transportation and championing innovation that will benefit our nation’s transportation system for decades to come”.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Anthony Foxx (pictured above with Peter at the event), presided over the ceremony in the White House. Together with other recipients, Peter participated in a panel discussion on transportation issues after receiving his award. You can read more about Peter and the event on the White House blog. Together with Dan Burden (a prior recipient of the Champion of Change award), Lagerwey authored the first definitive assessment of road diets in 1999, Road Diets: Fixing the Big Roads. Road diets are now one of nine “proven countermeasures” promoted by the Federal Highway Administration to address traffic safety.
