Focus On Equity in the February ITE Journal

The February 2020 issue of the ITE Journal is devoted to the vital topic of equity in transportation. The issue features “How to Place Equity at the Center of Our Work,” which makes the case for centering equity in the work of transportation design and planning, and offers suggestions for developing an equity-focused approach in organizations and in the world at large. The article was written by Toole Design’s Jennifer Toole, AICP, ASLA, Tamika L. Butler, Esq., and Jeremy Chrzan, P.E., PTOE, LEED® AP and includes advice and insight about:

    • How equity and transportation are related
    • Making equity part of your organization’s culture
    • Engaging with the public about these issues

The issue also includes practical advice from Charles Brown, MPA, CPD of Rutgers University on implementing an equity approach, as well as ITE’s Holly Gilbert Stowell with a look at the potential of using micromobility to build connections to underserved communities.

ITE’s Executive Director and CEO Jeff Paniati previously joined us on The New Es of Transportation podcast to talk about the role of ethics in the transportation profession. We’re pleased that ITE is engaging in the challenging but critical conversation around equity, and we’re grateful to a part of this special issue.

As transportation professionals, we face constant opportunities to either dismantle or perpetuate inequities. We must recognize them and use our work to make the world more equitable.
