Shaping the Future with Our 2024 Interns

Every year, the Toole Design summer internship program gives us an inspiring glimpse at the future of transportation planning and engineering  and this year was no exception. This summer, we welcomed a talented and diverse cohort of young professionals in six offices and across the United States. Our 2024 Toole Design interns immersed themselves in hands-on learning, contributing directly to planning and design projects from day one.

Quote from 2024 Toole Design Intern Sarah Udelhofen that reads, "I had a great time introducing residents and visitors to the Snohomish River Trail project during a public engagement outreach event. Having felt uncomfortable biking this corridor before, I was excited to engage with the community about their needs for Phase 1, which will connect Everett’s Riverfront Park to Snohomish with a new 5.5-mile trail."

The interns participated in coffee chats with our staff, learned new software, and took on significant roles in a range of projects — from designing trails and advancing Safe Routes to School programs to driving Vision Zero efforts. They also collaborated on a research project exploring the role of AI in urban planning and design, culminating in a presentation to our leadership team.

Through this experience, our interns refined their technical skills while also displaying the innovative thinking that will lead our field into the future. We applaud this forward-thinking spirit in all of this year’s interns, including Tayo Taiwo, who won the 2024 APBP Ken Cross Student Poster Contest for his research on sustainable campus commuting, supported in part by the analysis skills he developed at Toole Design.

Quote from 2024 Toole Design Intern Tayo Taiwo that reads, "As part of the Roanoke Vision Zero Plan, I participated in a walk audit of the identified high injury network (HIN) area. A few minutes after the audit, another crash happened nearby. While crashes are never a good thing, the incident demonstrates the accuracy of our expertise."

As we celebrate the accomplishments of our 2024 Toole Design interns, we’re excited to see how their contributions will continue to influence our work and the active transportation industry. If you’re inspired by their journey, we encourage you to apply to our internship program in the future and become part of the next generation of changemakers.

Quote from 2024 Toole Design Intern Caroline Delcroix that reads, "My advice to future interns is to always ask questions. Ask to get involved in every project that interests you. Ask to attend the meetings that sound impactful to you. If you see someone whose career inspires you, ask to meet with them."
