Mariel Colman, PE, AICP

Mariel Colman is a senior civil engineer leading Toole Design’s Ohio Engineering & Design team. Her work focuses on rethinking how street and networks are planned and designed — using engineering tools to deliver safer, more functional, and more human-centered places. She specializes in redesigning streets for its intended role, whether prioritizing placemaking or mobility, and in challenging conventional assumptions about capacity and performance. Mariel was a lead author of the Ohio DOT Multimodal Design Guide and has led projects ranging from corridor redesigns to safety plans and design guidance. Her work demonstrates how engineers can shape street networks that perform well not only as transportation systems, but as places.

Outside of work, Mariel can usually be found dancing, gardening, or tackling historic home DIY projects with her husband, all under the close supervision of their two cats, Alfred and Pistachio.
