Matthew Arnold, AICP
Director of Planning, Western U.S.
Matthew is an urban designer working at the intersection of architecture, mobility, and land use planning. He cares deeply about client service, public process, and ensuring positive outcomes for the communities he serves. As Toole Design’s Western Planning Director, Matthew leads multimodal transportation planning and streetscape design projects and mentors the company’s talented cohort of planners throughout our Western offices. His experience includes campus planning, city-wide comprehensive and general plans, neighborhood and Downtown plans, site design for transit-oriented development, and multimodal transportation plans. He has also led sustainable streetscape projects, working closely with City staff, stakeholders, and community members to design welcoming, compelling, and award-winning Main Streets. In addition to his public sector projects, Matthew has worked on several significant private development projects, participated in university plans, and spent a decade consulting on district-scale planning efforts for a global high-tech firm based in Silicon Valley.
Outside of the office, Matthew is an avid hiker, mountain biker, and reader — except when he’s at shows (which is a lot of the time).
