Project Summary

The City of Bremerton, Washington partnered with Toole Design to create a community-informed wayfinding strategy and design guidelines that address all modes of travel. The system is designed to fit seamlessly into Bremerton’s existing streetscape while providing clear guidance for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.

Our work established a phased approach to wayfinding, beginning with a vision and strategy, a toolkit of consistent signage designs, and fabrication-ready specifications for implementation. The sign family reflects Bremerton’s identity and coordinates with existing infrastructure, reusing post locations where possible.

Community engagement was central to the process. Residents and stakeholders had several opportunities to provide feedback and ensure that the result felt like a natural part of Bremerton.

The first phase of installation was completed in early 2025, focusing on the pedestrian experience in Downtown Bremerton, the shopping district of Manette, and the nearby waterfront. Installed signs feature custom pedestrian maps with illustrations of key landmarks. The result is a coordinated wayfinding system that ties the city together, offering consistent cues that help residents and visitors alike move confidently through Bremerton.
