Project Summary

Toole Design developed the City of Pittsburgh’s 2020 Bike(+) Plan, which includes a citywide bike network, bikeway selection guidance, and a series of supportive programs and policies. The Plan takes a proactive approach by incorporating emerging forms of mobility, including  pedal-assist electric bicycles, motorized scooter and skateboards, and other individual mobility modes.

Since its publication, the City has signed on to PeopleforBike’s Final Mile Program and is committed to rapidly installing a connected network of bicycle facilities. We are currently supporting City staff to scope up to 30 bike projects throughout Pittsburgh. This includes developing bike facility types, preliminary cost estimates, outreach materials, alternatives analysis, and traffic studies.

We also maintain an on-call contract with the City. Using a small pallet of materials including paint, flexible plastic delineators, speed humps, traffic circles, and signal updates, our team is laying out construction plans for 4 bikeway projects, totaling over 4 miles of new bikeways.

Expertise Applied

One recent rapid-implementation project includes using flexposts and new pavement markings to create a mid-block crossing for pedestrians.
Another rapid-implementation project utilizes paint to designate a shared bike lane and marked crossing.
