Victoria AAA Bike Lanes
Victoria, BC
Project Summary
The City of Victoria is undertaking a large-scale plan to implement a network of All Ages and Abilities (AAA) bikeways that provide connections throughout the city and tie into parts of the regional cycling network, such as the Galloping Goose Trail. The City has set the goal of having over 30km of AAA bike routes, and in 2019 it identified eight priority corridors to be implemented by 2022. These projects included Hillside/Quadra and Vancouver Street, an almost 5 km route stretching from the north city boundary to the south waterfront trail connection, and Harbour Road, a critical missing connection for cyclists connecting downtown Victoria to inter-regional destinations via the Galloping Goose Trail. Additional off-corridor traffic calming and utility upgrades were also included in the project.
With engagement and concept design completed, our consultant team prepared preliminary and detailed design, tender, and construction documents; we are also providing construction administration support. The AAA network along these corridors includes bicycle boulevard (neighbourhood greenway) facilities on low-volume residential streets with traffic calming; uni-directional protected bikeways; and bi-directional protected bikeways. While the original design scope of the project included road works, public realm improvements, plantings, and signals, our team was tasked with additional scope for green stormwater infrastructure to help mitigate flooding along Vancouver Street.
Construction activities began in August 2020 and are scheduled to be completed in January 2021. Throughout the duration of the project, our team worked collaboratively across provinces/states and through work-from-home orders to provide a cohesive, complete, and high-quality product with minimal delays.
