Project Summary

Toole Design has overseen the design of a one-mile extension of the Mary Black Rail Trail from concept through to construction documents. The extension will take the trail into downtown, connecting to Barnet Park and beyond using a mix of facilities—shared use path sections, a sidewalk, and street-level separated bikeway—to provide a safe and comfortable experience for all users.

We refined previous preliminary design recommendations to better meet traffic, safety, budget, and SCDOT requirements. The project is currently out to bid for construction and once built, will be the first separated bicycle facility in the area to use buffers and physical separation.

Trail Connection Overlay
The trail extension will connect the popular rail trail to downtown Spartanburg and Barnet Park.
We developed images depicting what the new facilities will look like on several streets along to gain community support.
