Project Summary

In Suwanee, Georgia, the community’s vision for a connected and accessible network of trails became a reality with Toole Design’s leadership on the Pedestrian and Bicycle Loop and Sidewalk Feasibility Studies project. This initiative was a key part of the City of Suwanee’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan. The study helped the City integrate its existing trails into a complete loop, improve access for all neighborhoods, and evaluate the feasibility of four challenging sidewalk projects.

Community engagement was central from the start. Suwanee residents were invited to share their insights and priorities through various channels, including an interactive online map, surveys, pop-up input booths along trails, and an open house. Their feedback emphasized the need for grade-separated crossings along major roads, desired trail amenities, and priority areas for improvement.

The recommended loop route was selected based on community input and an analysis of factors like topography, environmental constraints, property ownership, and connections to key destinations. The final report included more in-depth information on key locations along the route, such as conceptual designs for railroad crossings, a pedestrian and bicycle bridge, and an alternative route through a wetland area.

For each sidewalk feasibility study, our project team developed alternative and preferred design concepts in CAD, considering anticipated impacts. The plan also included cost estimates, a five-year work program, and implementation guidance. Beyond infrastructure, the plan incorporated recommendations for placemaking and trail branding, reflecting Suwanee’s vibrant character through its trail system.
