Project Summary

Toole Design oversaw the design of the Hub City Hopper, a one-mile extension of the Mary Black Rail Trail in Spartanburg, SC, from concept through to construction documents. The extension takes the trail into downtown, connecting to Barnet Park and beyond using a mix of facilities — shared use path sections, a sidewalk, and street-level separated bikeway — to provide a safe and comfortable experience for all users.

As part of the concept design process, our team refined previous preliminary design recommendations to better meet traffic, safety, budget, and South Carolina DOT requirements. We also developed renderings to help the community envision what was possible for their streets. In December 2022, the Hub City Hopper officially opened to the public, making it the first separated bicycle facility using buffers and physical separation in the area. People for Bikes also listed it as one of the Best Bike Lanes of 2022.
