Toole Design Engineers Present at Iowa Bicycle Summit

TDG senior engineers KC Atkins and Hannah Pritchard recently headed south from the Minneapolis office to the Iowa Bicycle Summit in Des Moines, IA. Hosted by the Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa Bicycle Coalition, The Iowa Bicycle Summit is now in its 12th year, and provides a great learning opportunity for local engineers, planners, and advocates to learn about best practices for planning and designing bicycle facilities. TDG was honored to be invited.

Hannah and KC presented two sessions. The first presentation – Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design : Best Practices and Lessons Learned provided an overview of many of the separated bike lane design recommendations from the MassDOT Separated Bike Lane Design Guide, as well as some updates to the guidance that has been developed since the Guide was published in 2015. The discussion amongst participants and presenters was very active, and the questions and conversation made it clear that this topic is very popular for state officials and engaged citizens alike.

The second presentation –  AASHTO Bike Guide 2018 Update – provided an overview of the upcoming update to the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, last published in 2012. This guide, known as the “green book” of bicycle design is a critical guidance document for bikeway designers. The presentation included a history lesson of how the practiced moved away from separated / protected bicycle infrastructure, and why it is now moving back in that direction.
