Project Summary

Toole Design assisted the Los Angeles Department of Transportation complete its first ever Women in Transportation Needs Assessment. This project helped LADOT understand the nuances of how women’s travel behavior and needs are or aren’t captured among citywide data, and what steps the city can take toward gender inclusivity and equity.

We performed an existing conditions analysis that explored the potential for analyzing 34 different citywide and regional datasets across three study neighborhoods and the city at large through a gender lens. We identified trends and gaps in the available data, and we joined this data to original survey responses to paint a valuable picture of how city infrastructure and data interact with women’s travel needs.

Our assessment included looking at collision locations with female victims.
Our outreach efforts prioritized the voices of people who are often excluded from transportation planning projects.
