Philadelphia Bicycle Facility Design
Philadelphia, PA
Project Summary
Under the Streets Department Planning On-Call contract, Toole Design developed 90% design plans for 13 bikeway design projects across the City of Philadelphia to fill missing links in the bicycle network and address bicyclist safety and comfort. These bikeways included separated bike lanes, buffered bike lanes, neighborhood bikeways, and two trail crossings with rapid flashing beacons.
We developed a design memorandum for neighborhood bikeways, providing a palette of options that the City can consider for their unique one-way bikeway streets. We also developed a memorandum on driveway sight distances for interactions between low-volume driveways and separated bike lanes. We also led an all-day training on bikeway design for City staff to discuss best practices and implementation strategies, as well as a two-day workshop to identify priority corridors to establish a citywide “all ages and abilities” bicycle network.
