Seattle Safe Routes to School 5-Year Action Plan
Seattle, WA
Project Summary
Achieving Vision Zero—eliminating traffic deaths—requires serious effort for cities across the continent. Seattle is leading the way with its Safe Routes to School 5-Year Action Plan, which guides investments in programs and infrastructure that make streets near schools safer. Toole Design worked with City staff and a school safety task force to develop a comprehensive, action-oriented plan, along with implementation tools such as an engineering toolkit, an arrival/dismissal toolkit, and a GIS-based ranking system for prioritizing investments. Thanks to the Action Plan, SDOT staff and school communities have the blueprint and tools they need to improve safety near schools and make safety for schoolchildren a major element of their Vision Zero work.
