Project Summary

As the City of Austin set out to re-envision its transportation system, it identified mobility hubs as a key opportunity to align future land use development with transportation investments. This forward-looking approach aims to improve access to and from activity centers across the city.

To work toward that goal, Toole Design supported the City in planning, designing, and evaluating pilot mobility hubs that will enhance multimodal access, support sustainable transportation choices, and improve connectivity across the city. This project establishes a framework for how mobility hubs can integrate transit, micromobility, and other streetscape amenities within a cohesive, people-centered system in Austin.

Our team developed a set of mobility hub typologies that reflect Austin’s diverse neighborhoods and transportation contexts. To ensure consistent design as the City builds out up to 48 hubs, we created a Kit of Parts resource—a flexible menu of mobility, public realm, and wayfinding elements that can be combined at each individual hub to offer the services and amenities needed most. We also led the development of concept designs for six pilot mobility hub locations, as well as planning-level cost opinions. Together, the hub typologies, kit of parts, and concept designs provided a playbook for Austin to move forward with mobility hub implementation across the city. Building on this playbook, Toole Design’s on-site augmentation staff with the City of Austin directly advanced the Mobility Hubs project from concept through 100% design, bringing field engineering and implementation expertise to translate the City’s mobility vision into construction-ready improvements.

Toole Design developed a Kit of Parts resource for the Austin, TX mobility hubs project, including EV charging, bikeshare, and pop-up retail space typologies.
