Project Summary

Arlington Public Schools wanted to increase bicycling, walking, and carpooling by school families and staff throughout the community. In response, Toole Design combined Transportation Demand Management (TDM) and Safe Routes to School (SRTS) strategies into a first-of-its-kind, actionable plan for the school system.

We gathered input from students, parents, and staff via surveys and over 60 presentations; conducted traffic analysis; and developed a tailored suite of program, policy, and engineering solutions for each school site. We also distributed Walking Route Maps and Pick-Up/Drop-Off Procedures to school families.

We have tracked progress through surveys and performance studies, and we have found that the plan led to:

  • new staff incentives for walking, biking, carpooling and transit use;
  • a doubling in participation in the student transit pass program;
  • an increase in biking and walking to school amongst students and staff; and
  • numerous infrastructure improvements at schools to facilitate safe circulation for all.

With the countywide plan serving as our guide, we developed a tailored suite of program, policy, and engineering solutions for each school site to improve transportation. Survey responses from students, parents, and staff across the 41 sites helped to further inform actionable plans throughout the school system.
