Project Summary

Toole Design is supporting the Boston Transportation Department in an ambitious and rapid rollout of a bicycle and pedestrian network connecting the existing infrastructure to much of downtown Boston. This work included the engagement, planning, and engineering design for bicycle facilities on approximately one mile corridor of Massachusetts Avenue. Toole Design assisted in the corridor redesign, which promotes non-vehicular options while addressing circulation challenges and trade-offs for vehicle operations. The engineering design of the corridor includes an on-street, two-way bicycle facility, bicycle signals, and accessible floating bus stops.

At the engineering phase, Toole Design provided detailed construction drawings in support of the curb work associated with the floating bus stop designs. At the final design stage, Toole Design prepared design plan sets, including pavement marking and signage plans, signal plans, grading, cross-sections, swept paths, and cost estimates, taking the design from 25% through to PS&E.
