Looking Ahead to ASLA 2024 in Washington, DC

We’re excited to celebrate the 125-year legacy of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) at the ASLA 2024 Conference, taking place October 6–9 in Washington, DC. This year’s conference will shine a spotlight on the role landscape architects play in shaping the public realm — including streets — to create safer, more inclusive communities.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of the nation’s capital, ASLA has organized a packed and informative program. We encourage you to connect with Toole Design staff at the sessions below, starting with a tour of DC’s bike infrastructure led by our President Jennifer Toole. Our contributions include the latest thinking on integrating accessibility into complex streetscapes, before concluding on Wednesday with a presentation on designing linear landscapes.

Sunday, October 6

Join President Jennifer Toole and Senior Planner Jim Sebastian on a 5-mile ride through DC’s diverse bike infrastructure. This tour will highlight key stops along protected bike lanes and multi-use trails, offering insights into DC’s rich cycling history and the design and implementation of bikeway facilities.

Monday, October 7

Senior Planner Jim Elliott and landscape architects Sarah Johnson and Eric Childs will discuss how mobility, equity, and design intersect in the public realm, and how federal guidance like PROWAG is advancing inclusive design. They’ll cover accessibility best practices, including examples from three communities across the United States.

Wednesday, October 9

Urban Design Practice Lead Cindy Zerger will discuss how the design of linear landscapes can be framed through curation, choreography, and culture to create exceptional solutions. Through three project examples, the panel will showcase how these landscapes can enhance community impact, ecological health, and well-being.

In addition to the sessions above, we will also be celebrating Tatiana Veloso as she officially accepts two well-earned awards: the 2024 Olmsted Scholar Graduate Finalist and the 2024 ASLA Student Honor Award in Urban Design. These awards acknowledge Tatiana’s past achievements and bright future as a landscape architect in our Raleigh office.

We love hearing what our colleagues are working on, and we look forward to learning and sharing the latest best practices for designing a resilient and equitable future at ASLA 2024. Please reach out if you’d like to set up a time to meet with a Toole Design presenter. See you in Washington, DC!
