We are looking forward to the 2026 Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting, taking place January 11–15 in Washington, DC. Hosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, TRB brings together the latest research and best practices shaping transportation today. At Toole Design, research is central to everything we do. From developing new tools and resources for data analysis to leading national studies on active transportation planning and design, we’re excited to share our insights with the broader TRB community.
Participating Toole Design staff will include Safety Practice Lead Angie Byrne, Research Scientist Kaylyn Levine, Principal Engineer Dylan Passmore, Project Engineer Zoe Turner-Yovanovitch, and Project Planner Joanna Wang. Members of our Silver Spring team will also be attending committee meetings and connecting with partners and colleagues throughout the week.
See our session details below, and be sure to say hello!
Sunday, January 11
On Sunday, you can find us at the Careers in Motion Networking Fair, sharing insights about our people-centered approach to transportation design. Stop by and meet us at Table B431.
In this workshop, Principal Engineer Dylan Passmore will share how tactile markings at floating bus stops can support wayfinding and safety for people who are blind or have low vision. He’ll draw examples from the latest research and real-world case studies. Get the session details here.
Monday, January 12
During this poster session, Project Planner Joanna Wang and Project Engineer Zoe Turner-Yovanovitch will present on the Bicycle Comfort Index (BCI), a tool we developed with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. By evaluating traffic conditions, infrastructure design, and the built environment, the BCI supports the planning and design of connected, comfortable bike networks. Get the session details here.
In committee meetings throughout the week, Research Scientist Kaylyn Levine will share updates on several of our active research projects, including:
- NCHRP 08-163: Defining Appropriate Design and Accommodation Thresholds for Active Transportation in a Context-Driven Approach
- NCHRP 08-165: Use of Active Transportation Data in Decision-Making
- NCHRP 07-37: Modern and Proven Approaches to Planning, Design, and Operation of Pedestrian Facilities (a comprehensive update to the AASHTO Guide for the Planning, Design, and Operation of Pedestrian Facilities, 2nd ed.)
We’re excited to share ideas and connect with the transportation research community at TRB 2026. If you’d like to meet with our team, please reach out to a Toole Design presenter or a member of our Silver Spring staff.
