Welcoming Three New Board Members

We are pleased to announce three new members of the Toole Design Board of Directors. Representing a range of disciplines and regions from across the company, the Board helps guide Toole Design’s long-term strategy and direction. As our planning, design, and engineering practices continue to evolve, these new members bring expertise that will strengthen the Board’s ability to support thoughtful and equitable growth nationwide. 

Mariel Colman is the Ohio Civil Engineering Manager, based in our Columbus office. As a professional engineer and planner, she combines strategic, systems-level thinking with deep technical expertise in transportation design. As a lead author of Ohio DOT’s first standalone Multimodal Design Guide, she is recognized for advancing safety-based, research-driven standards. Mariel leads trainings on right-sizing roadways, with a particular strength in bringing public and technical stakeholders along in rethinking transportation design through a safety lens. Her combined engineering and planning experience brings a well-rounded perspective to Board discussions.

Dustin DeKoekkoek is our Seattle Office Director, leading a multidisciplinary team that delivers high-quality, accessible, and safer street designs across the Pacific Northwest. A steady and strategic leader, he is known for guiding teams through complex design and construction challenges while keeping projects grounded in community needs. With two decades of civil engineering experience and stewardship of one of the firm’s largest offices, Dustin brings valuable leadership and technical insight to the Board.

Kate Maker is our Deputy Director of Civil Engineering, based in the Boston office. She brings two decades of experience delivering transportation construction projects in urban and suburban corridors. Known for her attention to detail, Kate frequently serves as Principal-in-Charge, helping ensure quality across technically challenging work. An expert in ADA compliance, she has also supported streetscape, park, and roadway improvement projects nationwide. Her experience overseeing quality and technical standards has equipped Kate to contribute immensely to the Board.
