Looking Ahead to APBP 2026 in Pittsburgh

We are looking forward to this year’s Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) Conference, happening August 10–12 in Pittsburgh, PA. Toole Design staff will present on topics ranging from youth e-bike safety and creative engagement strategies to corridor design and quick-build success stories. Mid-Atlantic Director of Operations Cipriana Patterson and Mid-Atlantic Director of Design Elizabeth Gilliam will also be in attendance, along with Active Transportation Planning Practice Lead Adam Wood, who is presenting a poster display on our holistic approach to measuring bicycle comfort. Trails as Part of a Complete Transportation Network

Kristin Saunders and fellow panelists will present best practices for connecting trails with on-street bicycle facilities and integrating trails into a complete transportation network.

Youth on the Move: Strategies for Safe E-Bike Use Across Ages and Communities
11:15 AM–12:30 PM
Mitch Coffman will join panelists from Minnesota DOT, Orange County, and the City of Costa Mesa to share the latest research and practical strategies for improving youth e-bike safety. Together, they’ll explore how communities can balance education, access, policy, infrastructure, and regulation.

From Walks to Wheels: Creative Ways to Engage Communities in Safer Streets

Ayden Cohen will share how traffic gardens can give children and families hands-on opportunities to experience and help shape safer street designs. The session will also feature examples from the City of Atlanta and other strategies for reaching more people and gathering meaningful input.

Elevate and Envision: A BIPOC Affinity Space
1:30 PM–3:30 PM
Anish Tailor will co-lead an interactive workshop focused on creating more welcoming and supportive spaces for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color working in active transportation.

How Today’s Arterials Can Meet Tomorrow’s Needs

Katie Sieb and fellow panelists will share strategies for making large, high-volume arterials safer and more walkable. Drawing on examples from Virginia and Cleveland’s University Circle district, the session will explore how untangling street networks can open new possibilities for even the busiest corridors.

Inherited Cities: What Millennial Women Survived and What Gen Z Will Redesign

Nina Ndichu and Ayden Cohen will lead a cross-generational conversation about how pedestrian and bicycle systems have often failed to support women navigating cities independently. Participants will leave with actionable ideas for redesigning streets, services, and systems to help close the active transportation gender gap.

How Many Ways Can You Slice a Narrow Street?
8:30 AM–10:30AM
Katy Sawyer and Sonam Agarwal will join City of Pittsburgh staff to lead an interactive workshop on how constrained streets can create opportunities for creative multimodal design. Through case studies of built work and a hands-on design exercise, participants will examine tradeoffs, test priorities, and develop ideas for a “skinny street” policy and design toolkit.

From Plan to Pavement: The Story Behind Austin’s Quick Build Success
10:45 AM–12:00 PM
Yvonne Kaczor and Josh Green will co-present with City of Austin staff, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the City’s quick build projects move from concept to construction. Drawing on their leadership of Toole Design’s augmentation team, they’ll share how embedded expertise, cross-departmental coordination, and adaptable design approaches support timely, context-sensitive Complete Streets improvements.
